we want to add a backup node, do a backup node consume a license ?.

yes, nodes take up a license slot, irrespective of what role you give them in the cluster. Actually, we’ll cover node roles in the Axon Server training on day 2. A “backup node” is a node with a backup role in a particular replication group. So, if you have 4 nodes, you could set up group A to use nodes 1-3 as Primary, then node 4 as Passive Backup, while another group might have nodes 2-4 as Primary and node 1 as Passive Backup.
